Fire Season in Brentwood: A Home Cleaning Calendar for Canyon and Hillside Homes
What to clean before, during and after fire season in a Brentwood canyon home: a month-by-month calendar, Santa Ana wind days and safe ash cleanup.
On this page
Fire season changes what a Brentwood home needs cleaned, and when. Before the dry months, clear window tracks, screens and outdoor areas and have vendors handle brush clearance and HVAC filters. On Santa Ana wind days, keep the house closed and plan a glass and terrace pass for the day after. After smoke or ash, remove the residue with HEPA vacuuming and damp wiping, never dry sweeping. This calendar is written for canyon and hillside homes in Brentwood, from Mandeville Canyon to Crestwood Hills. For regular service, see our page on house cleaning in Brentwood.
When is fire season in Brentwood, and why does it change the cleaning?
In practice, the risk runs from late summer into winter, peaking on Santa Ana wind days when hot, dry air blows from the interior toward the coast. Brentwood backs onto the Santa Monica Mountains, and parts of it, Mandeville Canyon included, sit in high fire hazard zones. The 2019 Getty Fire started on the neighborhood’s edge, and the January 2025 Palisades Fire spread smoke and ash across Brentwood.
For the house, that means two kinds of mess. One is steady: fine dust on glass, terraces and outdoor furniture after every windy spell. The other comes all at once: smoke odor and ash after a fire, even one miles away. A recurring cleaning plan handles the first. The second needs its own visit.
What should a Brentwood home have cleaned before fire season?
A pre-season reset, ideally in late spring or early summer, makes everything after it easier. The checklist we use:
- Window tracks, sliders and screens cleaned out, so dust has less to collect in.
- Exterior-facing glass and large interior panes detailed.
- Outdoor furniture and cushions cleaned, with a plan for where they go on red flag days.
- Entry mats replaced or washed, since they catch most of what comes indoors.
- Soft furnishings near doors and sliders vacuumed thoroughly.
- HVAC filters changed by your HVAC vendor, and brush clearance done by your landscaper where the fire department requires it.
The last item is not cleaning work, but it is the one most often forgotten. Under our house management service we coordinate those vendors and confirm the work was done.

What does a year of home care look like in a Brentwood canyon home?
This is the calendar we use as a starting point with hillside clients. The weeks shift with the weather.
| When | Focus | Cleaning work |
|---|---|---|
| January to March | Rainy season | Entry floors and mats after storms, check for leaks and mud tracked in, winter deep clean |
| April to May | Spring reset | Full deep clean, windows and tracks, outdoor furniture brought back into use |
| June to July | Pre-season prep | Screens, sliders and terraces, vendor reminders for brush clearance and filters |
| August to December | Wind and fire season | Extra glass and terrace passes after wind days, smoke and ash cleanup when needed |
| November to December | Holidays | Guest rooms and entertaining spaces, post-event cleaning |
A longer version covering the whole property is in our Los Angeles estate maintenance calendar.

What should you do on Santa Ana wind days?
Keep windows and sliders closed, bring cushions and light outdoor items inside, and leave the cleaning for afterward. Cleaning glass or terraces while the wind is still blowing just resets the clock. The day after the wind drops is the right time for an extra pass on exterior glass, sliders, window tracks and outdoor furniture.
Access matters on these days too. On red flag days, Los Angeles restricts parking on posted hillside streets, and Mandeville Canyon Road is a single road in and out. We confirm arrival and parking with you before sending a crew into the canyon on a red flag day, and reschedule when it makes more sense to wait.
What should you do inside the house if an evacuation order is likely?
Follow the fire department first. The Los Angeles Fire Department publishes its “Ready, Set, Go!” guidance, and official evacuation orders always take priority over anything in a cleaning plan. Within that, a few habits make the cleanup afterward easier:
- Close all windows, sliders and interior doors before leaving, so less smoke and ash gets deep into the house.
- Bring outdoor cushions, umbrellas and light furniture inside or into the garage.
- Leave a note for your house manager or cleaning team with anything that needs special handling on return, such as artwork, rugs or stone surfaces.
When the air is still smoky, wait. South Coast AQMD issues smoke advisories for the region, and cleaning while smoke is still settling means doing the same work twice. Book the deep clean for when the advisory has lifted and the area has reopened.
How should smoke and ash be cleaned out of a home?
Gently, and in the right order. Fine ash spreads when it is dry swept or blown, so it should be picked up with a HEPA vacuum and then damp wiped. Work from the outside in: terraces and entries first so ash is not tracked back indoors, then window tracks and sills, then hard surfaces, and finally soft furnishings, which hold smoke odor the longest.
- Change HVAC filters before running the system for long.
- Wash or professionally clean outdoor cushions rather than brushing them off.
- Wipe hard floors with a damp mop suited to the finish instead of a dry dust mop.
- Launder bedding and curtains in rooms where windows were open.
If a fire was close enough for an evacuation order, treat the first visit afterward as a deep clean, not a routine one. Our wildfire smoke cleanup guide covers the full process, and smoke smell removal from carpet and upholstery covers fabrics.
How do glass, wood and stone hold up to dust and ash?
Each needs a different approach, and the wrong one scratches or stains. Brentwood homes have a lot of large glass, wood paneling and natural stone, which is why this matters more here than in most places.
| Surface | After dust or ash | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Large interior and exterior glass | Rinse or dust off grit first, then a streak-free wipe | Dry wiping grit across the pane |
| Walnut paneling and millwork | HEPA vacuum with a soft brush, then barely damp microfiber | All-purpose sprays, standing moisture |
| Hardwood floors | HEPA vacuum, then a lightly damp wood-safe mop | Wet mopping, steam on unsealed wood |
| Marble and travertine | pH-neutral stone cleaner, wiped dry | Vinegar, citrus, bleach |
We use eco-friendly, non-toxic products by default. More detail is in our guide to caring for high-end finishes.
Who handles which part of fire-season home care?
Split it by trade. Cleaners handle the inside of the house, glass, terraces and outdoor furniture. Landscapers handle brush clearance, the HVAC vendor handles filters and ducts, and roofers or gutter specialists handle roofs and gutters. The trouble is that nobody owns the whole list. In a household with a house manager, that person does. Without one, the homeowner does, usually from memory.
Our guide on what an estate manager in Los Angeles covers explains how outsourced house management takes that list off your plate.

Frequently asked questions
When is fire season in Brentwood?
The highest risk runs from late summer into winter, and peaks on Santa Ana wind days. Recent fires affecting Brentwood include the 2019 Getty Fire and the January 2025 Palisades Fire, which spread smoke and ash across the neighborhood.
Should I sweep up ash myself?
Do not dry sweep or use a leaf blower, because it puts fine ash back in the air. Ash should be removed with a HEPA vacuum followed by damp wiping, working from the outside of the house inward.
How often should window tracks be cleaned in a canyon home?
At least once before fire season as part of a pre-season reset, and again after heavy wind or any smoke event. Tracks and sliders collect dust quickly in hillside homes.
Do you clean outdoor furniture and terraces after wind events?
Yes. Exterior glass, sliders, terraces and outdoor furniture can be added as an extra visit the day after the wind drops, or included in your regular schedule during fire season.
Can you deep clean a home after an evacuation order is lifted?
Yes. Request a visit as soon as the area reopens. We treat the first visit after a nearby fire as a deep clean and schedule it according to availability.
Who takes care of brush clearance?
Your landscaper does the brush clearance itself. Under our house management service, FJ Luxury Services coordinates that vendor, along with HVAC and other trades, and confirms the work was completed.
